Hazardous Devices
A downloadable game
Description:
Hazardous Devices is a top-down shooter with enemy combat and objectives such as bomb defusal and hostage rescue to complete a level. Each level that a player faces will have one or more of the following objectives: eliminate enemies, defuse the bomb, and free the hostage. The game mode objective ‘Eliminate the enemies’ puts the player into a more fast-paced situation with more enemies and where the sole objective is to kill enemies while avoiding getting killed. Once the building is free of enemies, the player has won. The defuse the bomb objective requires the player to navigate through groups of enemies, but does not necessarily require those enemies to be eliminated. The only objective is to reach the bomb and defuse it before it explodes or before the player is killed by surrounding enemies. Once the bomb has been defused, the player must safely exit the building to progress to the next level. Finally, the free the hostage objective requires the player to safely reach the hostage, free them, and escort them out of the building. While escorting the hostage, the player must still navigate through the remaining enemies but has to account for their slowed movement speed. Once all the given objectives have been cleared, the player has won the level and can move on to their next mission.
Controls:
- Use WASD to move your character.
- Use the mouse to aim and left-click to fire your weapon.
Instructions:
- The user can select any level when the game launches.
- The player must enter a building and complete objectives in order to pass the level.
- One objective is to defuse the bomb within a certain amount of time. The player can defuse the bomb simply by walking close enough to it. If the player is not able to defuse the bomb in time, the game will end.
- Another objective is to free the hostage. The player must successfully escort the hostage to the extraction zone which is indicated by the carpets.
- Finally, the player must kill all of the enemies in the building in order to complete the mission.
- After the mission is over, a mission success or failure screen will display and the player can choose to exit to the main menu.
- From there, the player is free to select any level.
Post Mortem:
Stuff we could have improved:
- Estimated how long things take to make/implement and get a better estimation of individual abilities to complete tasks.
- Figuring out how to distribute the workload more evenly, possibly getting to know the other team members' abilities/tasks better.
- Better communication/better ways of reaching people other than discord.
- More time is reserved for the testing and polishing of gameplay and presentation.
- Asking TAs for input on the game more frequently.
What we thought we did right:
- The planned deadlines were placed well and that made it so that we had enough time to finish the project on time
- Another thing that we did well was starting early so that we could complete the game
- Everyone was invested and worked hard and stuck to the schedule
- If there were issues, we were able to address them and adjust accordingly
